What to Pack for Honeymoon Vacations – To bring. Or not to bring. That is the question.

Since the beginning of time, when humans first thought to take a vacation from the daily grind of hunting and gathering, the fundamentals of packing have gone unchanged. Essentials first. Then, if space allows, the non-essentials. Unfortunately, with lost luggage and fees for checking a bag becoming commonplace, deciding what to pack for honeymoon vacations just isn’t routine anymore. Pile on the inescapable fear of forgetting something, and you’re on the fast track to higher blood pressure on what should be the vacation of a lifetime.

As an alternative to an emergency trip to the hospital, we recommend preparing a “What to Pack for Honeymoon Vacations” checklist. Write down everything you think you’ll need – from socks to sunscreen – before you pull your luggage out of storage and dust it off. Then, when you’re ready to start packing, you can check items off one-by-one in an organized fashion.

What to Pack for Honeymoon Vacations – The checklist starts here.

  • Contingency Planning – The three main wardrobes for most honeymoons are beachwear, casual wear and semi-formal/formal wear. Pack accordingly. And though it probably won’t be cold where you're going, prepare for unseasonably cold weather just in case.

  • Pack Something Nice – Basics? Check. Still got a little room? Treat yourself and your bride by bringing something to dress up a bit. Whether it’s a three-piece suit or accessories for a birthday suit, pack something special. It is, after all, your honeymoon. Not to mention that for any formal dinners you might be attending, you’ll probably need slacks more than flip flops.

  • Go Wrinkle-Free – Avoid spending time on your honeymoon over an iron. Try to pack garments with wrinkle-resistant microfibers. Rolling your clothes in plastic is also a good way to avoid wrinkles and it even creates extra space in your luggage. You’ll also avoid the inevitable annulment, should you ask your new wife to do it.

  • Avoid Disaster – If you’re flying, pack a carry-on with the bare necessities that will keep you functioning even if your checked luggage takes a detour. Be sure to check in advance what sizes/types of carry-on the airline allows. Most airlines let each passenger carry on two bags. Pack enough clothes and portable, FAA-approved toiletries in these bags to hold you over for a couple days. Your significant other ought to take the necessary precautions, too. That way you’ll both have swimsuits and toothbrushes should the worst happen.

  • Let Your Agenda Guide You – Are you headed to the beach? Hiking? Biking? Maybe site-seeing? Pack what you need to enjoy the activities you’ve planned. For example, flip flops for the beach and boots for the mountains.

  • Bring a Camera – Show off your sensitive side by packing film (or memory cards if you’re a digital kind of guy) so you can capture every moment and reminisce with your wife over the images for years to come.

  • Do You Really Need It – Before you zip up your luggage and lock it tight, ask yourself if you absolutely, positively need everything you packed. For example, a garment bag. If your honeymoon is all about casual relaxation, then a regular suitcase will do just fine. But if formal dinners are part of the itinerary, you’ll want to avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed.

What to Pack for Honeymoon Vacations – A few more tips to consider.

  • Play it Safe – Give your itinerary to a family member of friend. That way they’ll know your flight times and will be able to bring something to the airport, like your passport, that you may have left behind.

  • Sunshine or Cloudy Days – Don’t assume that the sunny locale you’ve chosen will be a constant 85° with clear skies. Check the weather and pack accordingly.  But bring sunglasses no matter what!

  • No Banana Hammocks – Enough said.

Deciding what to pack for honeymoon vacations is no easy task. It’s an integral part of planning an unforgettable getaway and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Don’t just unload your dresser drawers into your luggage. Wherever you’re headed, make a list and pack smart. So instead of worrying about what to pack for honeymoon vacations, you can focus on more important things. Your new wife, for example.
